What actually shortens a furnace's life

Most Furnaces Don't Die of Old Age. They Die of Neglect.

Most of the furnaces I've condemned in twenty years didn't die of old age. They died of never being looked at.

That sounds like a line a guy selling maintenance would say, so let me show you the actual mechanism instead. There's a specific chain of events that turns a neglected furnace into an unrepairable one, and once you see it, the once-a-year thing stops sounding like an upsell and starts sounding like arithmetic.

Heating season is about to start. This is the month to deal with it, not the first cold night in November.

A furnace is an assembly, not an appliance

Most people picture a furnace as one object that's either working or finished. It isn't. It's a cabinet holding a stack of separate components, and each one has its own service life:

  • Igniter. Consumable. It wears out, you replace it.
  • Flame sensor. Fouls with residue and drops the unit out, usually on the coldest morning. Cleaned or replaced.
  • Run capacitor. Cheap, common failure.
  • Pressure switch and its hoses. Hoses crack and fill with condensate.
  • Inducer motor. Bearings eventually go.
  • Blower motor and control board. Both replaceable.
  • Heat exchanger. This is the one that matters.

Everything on that list except the last item is a part and an hour of labour. The heat exchanger is the only component whose failure genuinely ends a furnace. So the entire question of whether your furnace lives or dies comes down to protecting one part.

How neglect kills the one part you can't replace

Here's the chain, and it isn't mysterious.

  1. The filter plugs, or the blower wheel loads up with dust, or both. Airflow across the heat exchanger drops.
  2. Less air moving through means the furnace runs hotter than it was designed to run.
  3. Hotter means the high limit switch starts cutting the burners off and back on to protect the unit.
  4. That cycling puts repeated thermal stress on the heat exchanger: heat up, cool down, heat up, cool down.
  5. Metal that gets stressed that way for years eventually cracks.

So the neglected furnace doesn't just wear out sooner. It wears out at the exact spot that makes it unrepairable. A unit that had its filter changed on a schedule loses an inducer motor at year fifteen and gets fixed. A unit that never got looked at cracks a heat exchanger at year twelve and goes to the scrapyard.

That gap, between a unit getting tired at twelve years and one still running properly at twenty, is mostly maintenance. It isn't the brand and it usually isn't luck.

What an actual tune-up includes

There's a real difference between a service call and somebody glancing at your furnace for ten minutes. A proper seasonal service should cover:

  • Burners cleaned, not just looked at.
  • Flame sensor cleaned so it stops dropping the unit out on cold mornings.
  • Blower wheel checked and cleaned, because a loaded wheel moves less air than it was built to move.
  • Filter changed, and you get told the right size and a realistic schedule for your house.
  • Combustion actually measured with an analyzer instead of eyeballed.
  • Safeties tested: high limit, pressure switch, rollout.
  • Venting inspected.

None of that is glamorous and none of it is expensive. It's most of the difference between a furnace that dies at twelve and one still going at twenty.

How to tell a tune-up from a sales call

This is worth saying plainly, because the maintenance visit is where a lot of unnecessary replacements start. Some outfits treat a maintenance call as a lead, not a service. The tells are consistent:

  • The visit produces a replacement quote but no measurements.
  • You're told the unit is 'on borrowed time' with no specific failed component named.
  • There's urgency attached to a decision that doesn't need to be made today.
  • The person telling you the unit is finished is also the person who'd sell you the new one.

There's a craft reason too, not just a money reason

Fixing something is a craft act. Replacing it is a transaction. When a technician works a problem, isolates the fault, puts the right part in and hears the burners light, something happens to him that does not happen when he writes up a quote.

That's the thing that pulls people into this trade in the first place, and it's been getting quietly trained out of them for years. A tech who spends the season selling equipment doesn't get better at diagnosis, because he isn't doing any. An apprentice riding along on changeouts learns how to carry sheet metal. An apprentice riding along on repairs learns how to think. I've spent a lot of years now bringing younger techs up, and repair-only is partly just me putting my own company where my own argument already was.

And there's a smaller thing that bothers me more than it probably should: a cabinet full of good steel going to a scrapyard over a forty dollar sensor.
